Hluhluwe / Umfolozi : Thursday 27 November 2014
Everyone has their favourite animal which they want to see more than any other in the Park and today’s request was for a black rhino ! We travelled the route that we know has yielded this magnificent beast recently but to no avail, and then, just as we thought our luck had run out completely we found one at Umganu. We spent an hour and a half there having lunch with a black rhino no more than 100 m from where were sitting. It was an amazing experience and, given the natural aggression of this animal, we kept our eye on him the whole time. He showed no aggression at all though and we eventually had to leave although we all agreed we could have stayed forever !! We also had a great lion sighting at view point 17 a little earlier. A majestic light coloured male was sitting regally next to his princess close to our vehicle, completely unperturbed by the excited chatter and clicking of cameras. At the main Black Umfolozi bridge a big breeding herd of elephants was playing in the river before moving off in the direction of Mpila. Again, lots of rhinos and buffaloes on show today as well as an abundance of general game.
